What is glutathione?
In the 1880s, a scientist named de Rey-Pailhade discovered its presence and called it "philionion", defining it as a substance that could spontaneously react with elemental sulfur to produce hydrogen sulfide.
In 1921, Nobel laureate Hopkins obtained it in muscle tissue and officially changed its name to "glutathione". After two years of research, Hopkins unveiled its mysterious veil. He determined that glutathione is a tripeptide formed by the condensation of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine through peptide bonds. Since then, glutathione has come into people's view.
The glutathione we usually talk about is actually reduced glutathione.
It is the most abundant endogenous antioxidant in human cells and is hailed as the "core of the antioxidant defense system" or "cell guardian".
role of glutathione in skin care
Glutathione is ubiquitous in the human body and acts as a natural reducing agent. It is easily oxidized into GSSG, thereby protecting other substances from oxidation. It is the main "killer" of free radicals in the human body.
Free radicals are a type of unstable molecules that may cause damage to cells and tissues. Glutathione helps maintain the structure and function of cells by capturing free radicals.
Protect the thiol groups in the protein from oxidation, repair the damaged thiol groups in the protein, and restore the active function of the protein.
GSH can also regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E, further enhancing the antioxidant capacity of cells.
Glutathione has the function of promoting cell regeneration and repair, and can delay the aging of skin cells, thereby achieving an anti-aging effect.
Glutathione can also inhibit the formation of melanin, reduce the appearance of pigmentation and wrinkles, and keep the skin youthful.
